Our activities

PUM has been an important player in the field of sustainable development since 1978, when it was founded by the Dutch employers’ federation VNO-NCW in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With over 2,700 experienced and independent experts it is the largest private-to-private, volunteer development agency of the Netherlands providing professional assistance from entrepreneurs to entrepreneurs in developing countries. By sharing knowledge and expertise with entrepreneurs worldwide, PUM improves business performance, facilitates investments and opens up opportunities for job creation.

Our activities in 2016

2016 was another successful year for us. We see SMEs as the backbone of sustainable economic development and as a catalyst of innovation, job creation and growth. Beyond generating economic benefits, SMEs are equally important for providing solutions to social and development problems, such as poverty, food insecurity, gender and social disempowerment, and for promoting the growth of a green economy.
Therefore, all of our core activities revolve around SMEs to work towards our mission of “sharing knowledge for vibrant businesses and better lives”. In order to achieve this, PUM manages a pool of 2,760 experienced and independent experts, and 139 volunteer staff.

In 2016, we were active in 68 countries worldwide which are on the list of partner countries of the DGGF and are eligible for official development assistance (ODA). Until 2016, PUM aimed to offer services to SMEs in as many countries worldwide as possible, spread over Africa, Asia, Latin America and a number of European non-EU countries. In 2016, PUM supported 1,687 SMEs through 1,868 tailor-made, short-term knowledge sharing missions. We also implemented:

  • 74 business links with Dutch companies
  • 19 seminars
  • 21 remote coaching activities

In addition to one-on-one support to SMEs, we also concluded a range of partnerships with other organisations to embed our activities into programmatic frameworks.
